From New York to Georgia: My Relocation Story and What You Should Know Before Making the Move

Why I Moved to Georgia and Why You Might Too

Back in 2015 I walked out of another brutal New York winter with full clarity: this wasn’t the life I wanted long-term. Tons of snow, high property taxes, sky-high home prices, and limited space were wearing me down. I’d first visited Georgia in 2008 and the difference in what you could buy for your money, even back then, felt like night and day.

New York will always be home to me, but Georgia has become a second home that offered lifestyle, space, and sustainability I couldn’t deny.

Before real estate I worked in corporate HR and spent years recruiting people from all over the country. Time and again I heard the same things from folks relocating for work or for life change. I get the fear. I get the questions. I get the hesitation.

That’s where I bring something different to the table: I’ve lived the move, seen the shift in lifestyle firsthand, and turned that experience into something practical for my clients.

Whether you’re coming for a job relocation or a fresh start, I’m here to help you understand what’s real about this transition — costs, markets, neighborhoods, and everyday quality of life.

What You Really Save When You Move Here

Moving from New York to Georgia isn’t just a change of scenery — it’s a change in affordability.

• Compared to New York, cost of living in Atlanta is significantly lower. In fact New York’s overall cost of living is more than 50% higher than Atlanta’s, with housing being the biggest driver of that gap. In many comparisons New York homes can be 80% or more expensive than similar homes in Atlanta.
• Georgia generally has lower property tax rates than New York.
• Rent and housing in Georgia are markedly cheaper — rent in Georgia can be roughly 19% less expensive than in New York, and home prices about 32% lower overall.
• Sales tax and income taxes also tend to be lower in Georgia, and that difference can show up in your monthly budget pretty quickly.

When you add all of that up it means more choice in the size of home you can afford, more disposable income for experiences or savings, and lower everyday stress around bills.

Atlanta and Beyond: Neighborhoods That Suit Different Lifestyles

Georgia offers a broad range of communities that appeal to different priorities — whether you want vibrant city life close to everything, classic suburban calm, or a family-friendly environment with room to grow.

Atlanta Metro – A central hub with dynamic dining, entertainment, culture, and job growth. Good for people who want city-adjacent living with easy access to work and play.

North Atlanta Suburbs
Roswell is known for big yards, a historic downtown vibe, and excellent schools. Prices here reflect that demand.
Alpharetta tends to be pricier but it delivers strong schools, amenities, and community energy that many families value.
Duluth offers small-town charm with access to metro opportunities.

South of Atlanta and Southeast Corridors
Fayetteville can provide more affordable housing, solid property tax profiles, and a quieter pace of life compared to inner suburbs.
McDonough continues to attract attention for its balance of accessible pricing and community feel.

Each of these areas has its own character. I’ve worked with clients who relocated for jobs in Atlanta and found their perfect fit down south, while others loved the energy up north.

My Story Isn’t Just A Tale It’s a Tool

I’ve walked this path myself. I know what it’s like to leave a place you love, endure the unknown, and land somewhere that gives you more than you expected. I also know the emotional questions that go with these decisions because I’ve lived them and helped many others navigate them.

Cost comparisons matter. Job growth and lifestyle matter. But what matters even more is confidence in the journey you’re about to take. If you’re considering relocating for work or a better way of life, let’s talk through your goals, your concerns, and how to make this transition smooth and rewarding.
